Dozens of Jimmy Buffett Fans Get Violently Sick on Dominican Republic Trip

Matt Fischer HEALTH, WORLD June 18, 2019

"A group of 47 Jimmy Buffett fans say they got violently sick while on a trip to the Dominican Republic. The mysterious illness adds to the number of American tourists who have become ill or died while visiting the country.

Dana Flowers, a member of the group, said that 47 people on the trip got so sick that many were unable to leave their rooms, and some are still not feeling “normal” two months later. “We were enjoying the beach and the pool, and about three or four days into the trip we started hearing about people getting sick. They were getting diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches.”

Flowers said the group first thought it was due to food poisoning, but their symptoms lasted longer than expected. He also said everyone who fell ill in the group either swam in the same pool or drank at the swim-up bar.

According to Flowers, after returning home from the trip, two members of his group tested positive for salmonella.

In 1969, Rainieri and Theodore Kheel,[8] a high-powered New York attorney and labor mediator, acquired a 58-million square meter lot on the eastern end of the Dominican Republic, which was covered with jungle and six miles of beach.[2][9][10] Their first project was a 40 guest hotel called the Punta Cana Club, inaugurated two years later.[2] In 1979, they constructed The Puntacana Hotel. The Punta Cana International Airport followed in 1984.[9] In 1997, Rainieri and Kheel partnered with Oscar de la Renta and Julio Iglesias to start work on the Punta Cana Marina and the real estate development of the area.[2]

In addition to his mediation roles, Kheel wrote a multi-volume text on labor law and the popular book The Keys to Conflict Resolution: Proven Methods of Resolving Disputes Voluntarily. He was also widely involved with such philanthropic organizations as the Gandhi Society for Human Rights, and in the civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s where he served as Executive Director of the National Urban League during the term of NUL President Lester Granger. Kheel was one of the principals in Tom Mboya's efforts of the late 50s and early 60s to organize the "Airlift Africa" project that ultimately brought some 230 African students to the U.S. over the period 1960-63 to study on scholarship at Class I accredited colleges.[4] Among these students was President Barack Obama's father, Barack Obama, Sr. who later settled in Hawaii where President Obama was born.
